Is There Such A Thing As Healthy Fast Food?

Well, honestly it is a real stretch of terms, but if I was faced with the option of skipping a meal or having some fast food I would. . . (keep reading).

 Learning to Make Healthier Choices at Fast Food Restaurants

So you are out running errands and in-between appointments your tummy starts to rumble.  At first it whispers softly to you just saying hello and reminding you of its existence.  

But the next time is firmer and more pronounced.  

You reach in your purse for a snack but there is none.  Not a bar, nut , raisin, or 100 calorie snack pack is in site!   

You drank down the last of your shake or water from the morning hoping for some relief but it hits the bottom of your empty stomach like a drop of water on a hot frying pan and it is soon GONE!

Then rumble that was once subtle is now in full effect and you are ALL OUT HUNGRY!!!!

"Attach, attach," you stomach is saying to your brain as it wages a full out cout de ta on your thoughts, leaving you helpless deranged and unable to do anything other than stage your food finding mission.

But your time is short, you can't retreat back home for food and there is no time for a sit down anything.  The walls are closing in and on every corner you see golden arches, red headed little girls, campaigning cows, and signs about the subway!   

If you are like me there are two things in this world that you don't want to be: HUNGRY or SLEEPY!  I just don't function well with either of those symptoms rearing it's ugly head. 


Sometimes we don't plan ahead and we end up eating fast food or no food-- given those options eat the damn fast food Anna Mae!

Just DON'T embrace it as a chance to have your inner FAT GIRL come out to play.

Most fast food places have tried to implement some healthier options on their menu with trendy salads, wraps, oatmeal, and even fruit and yogurt options.

My top picks for fast food are Subway, Chick-Fil-A, and Wendys
 

Healthy Fast Food At Subway

Please keep in mind I use the term "healthy Fast Food" loosely in this article or relative to the other choices on the menu. . .

If you need food on the GO-- Subway is by far one of the best options around.  Now-- I personally gave up "deli meat" some time ago because of all the undesirable STUFF in it, but you can have a GREAT fresh VEGGIE sub  at Subway without doing damage to the waist line.  They also have salads (but that isn't always satisfying or easy to eat when you are in a hurry). 

And lets face it-- the 5 Dollar Footlong-- is easy on the pockets!
 



Healthy Fast Food At Chick-Fil-A


Chick-Fil-A seems to have made a great effort to build health fast food options into their menu.

They offer some pretty good chicken salads, grilled chicken beast sandwich (whole wheat buns), grilled chicken wraps, and  fruit cups or carrot & raisin salad in lei of french fries.  If none of that impresses you that have breast of chicken soup too!

They even have some healthy fast food breakfast choices with oatmeal being an option.

 

 


 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wendys Healthy Fast Food

The chili is a favorite at Wendy's, and for good reason. Not only is it cheap and filling; it's also one of the least waistline-beating options on the menu. If a small chili isn't filling enough, swapping it out for the larger only adds 280 more calories and a modest increase in fat and sodium.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tips For Making Healthy Fast Food Choices At Restaurants

So just make smarter choices. Here are some tips to keep you from completely derailing your progress when and if this happenes.


My Top Ten Healthy Fast Food Tips

  1. Drink WATER (not soda or sugary tea or lemon aid-- not even diet soda)
  2. Select the grilled or baked items instead of fried.
  3. Substitute your fries. Ask for a side salad with fat free/low fat dressing on the side instead of French fries.
  4. Only eat half of your order, or split it with a friend. Use the side salad and a large cup of water to fill you up!
  5. Half the bun on your sandwich: take off the top of the bun and save yourself the carbs. If you go hard ask for no bun and ask them to wrap the sandwich in lettuce.
  6. Make a special order. Most restaurants will have no problem removing cheese, sauces, bacon and other extra toppings.
  7. Be a kid again and try the kids menu.
  8. Pass on the shakes and cookies and get the fruit.
  9. Eat with the goal of subsiding hunger and NOT to get FULL
  10. Drink more WATER (yes I am saying it again)
So there you have it.  A quick and easy guide to stress free ordering when you are out with friends or family at fast food joints (hopefully against your will).

I am in no way saying that Fast Food is an Okay option for everyday dining.  What I aim saying is that when it does happen (and sometimes it does).  This is how to not get too far off track.

  1. Great tips! I like subway veggie sandwich when in a hurry, and I always drink only water. Hubby and I split most of the time as portions in So. Cal are huge! Btw I lost 5 pounds on the meta switch. That system works!
